Take five modest mark-ups

But forget any lists for the food: at Chun Po, a modestly decorated foodie's heaven, the big Post-it Notes on the wall are where you'll find the great, often unusual, Cantonese/ Sichuan food. The whitebait omelette is a gem.

East meets best

From Aussie-Chinese to more adventurous modern fare, Chun Po has it all

Every neighbourhood should have a Cantonese restaurant like Chun Po. Small and bustling with homely décor, swift service and tasty food, this gem in Glenferrie Road , Malvern has all of the nostalgic atmosphere of an old-time Australian-Chinese restaurant.
However, it also has the modern-day bonuses of quality ingredients, uncompromising cooking and a short, smart, well-directed wine list.
It's the sort of familiar and hospitable restaurant where you feel like a regular- or plan to become one- on your first visit.
Service is friendly and accurate.
The menu is enormous. The wall specials are a good place to start, but there's plenty of good cooking on the main menu.
Dim sims are filled with juicy pork and cabbage. The san choy bow is very good and generous. Classic chicken was lovely- full of subtle salty flavours and wonderful water-chestnut texture. Roast duck was served on pickled vegetables with an orange-based sauce, and was crunchy and juicy in all the right places. Skewered plump king prawns were served on a sizzle plate and doused with a mild but tasty XO sauce at the table. With the food so good and the prices so reasonable it's no wonder Chun Po is packed to the rafters with a demographic-defying crowd. People would travel from across town to dine here.
